CATCHING big fish is second nature to the Newton twins, who spent their teens casting lines every day while growing up in Evans Head.

Both brothers nabbed sizable fish on Saturday in the Evans Head Fishing Classic, with Scott Newton pipping his identical twin brother Brett with an 11.9kg cobia, or black kingfish.

The big catch immediately put the Kyogle father of two atop the leaderboard in the cobia class.

“I was buggered I tell you,” Scott said after describing the 15-minute struggle with the weighty beast.

“I was happy I got it in. I already dropped two others just prior, 15 minutes apart.”

There was a fair bit of sibling rivalry on show between the brothers, who landed their catches while fishing an offshore reef from Brett’s boat.
