Located within the Richmond Valley is Evans Head. This is the Northern Rivers’ least explored yet richest oasis, right in the centre of the region. Evans Head, referred to as the “Jewel of the Richmond Valley” is the first place of the Bundjalung Nation, a peaceful, coastal fishing village located on the banks of the stunning Evans River rich with Aboriginal history and heritage and amazing small estuaries just waiting to be explored. It was the first commercial prawning port in Australia and still boasts a strong fleet that brings in the best catches of the day for distribution to regional and national markets as well as the local retail market through the Evans Head Fisherman’s Co-op.
With a multitude of beaches, the surf surrounding Evans Head is ideal for all surfers of all levels. It enjoys protection from the big southeast swells that get the local big-wave riders excited. Serious surfers ride the swell around Goanna Headland while the main beach and safe river beaches and estuaries are great for kids and other swimmers. The river that divides the town attracts lots of ocean wildlife and there’s great fishing to be had both in the river itself, straight off the beach and great rock fishing into the river and ocean for the more adventurous.
