The Richmond Valley Mayor says about 200 people attended a meeting overnight to discuss the future of the Silver Sands caravan park at Evans Head.

Ernie Bennett says some travelled from as far as Brisbane to attend.

He says community concerns are running high about plans to upgrade the facility, which could lead to higher charges and fewer sites.

Cr Bennett says there was a call for the council to resume management of the park from the state’s Crown Holiday Parks Trust.

“It’s a crown reserve and it was taken out of the control of council, and this is something that’s happened right up and down the coast,” he said.

“The department has selected those parks that had the potential to earn quite substantial money.

“Now when council ran the park, costs in there were half what they are today, and it’s only been a couple of years.”
