A GRANT of just over $1 million will help Richmond Valley Council restore culturally significant areas at Evans Head damaged by floods in 2012.
Minister for Finance and Services Andrew Constance and Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis made the announcement yesterday.
It comes on top of $1.7 million provided to the council last May to help with the clean-up after major storms and floods.
“Following detailed investigation and planning, council has discovered the remains of some previously hidden Aboriginal middens on council-owned land at Evans Head,” Mr Constance said.
“Council has redesigned the scope of restoration works and this additional assistance from the state will help them protect the heritage of these culturally significant sites.”
Mr Gulaptis also welcomed the grant, which he said would relieve ratepayers of the cost of preserving these special areas.
“The storm had a massive effect on the region with heavy rainfall causing flash floods and damaging winds in and around Lismore, Ballina, Casino, Kyogle, Yamba and Maclean,” he said.
